Scenes from a vacation

It was snowing when I arrived Friday night. When I woke up Saturday morning there was about two inches on the ground. The highs were in the 20's and the lows in single digits the whole time I was there.

The blue/white truck belongs to the next door neighbor Darren. He's a 20-something year old who has a bunch of toys like a boat and snowmobile. His favorite is a four-wheel ATV which has a plow attachment. He plows the sidewalks up and down the street just for fun. He also clears my mother's driveway when he has the time, which I greatly appreciate. I've never met him, but just mom says he's a very nice young man.

The white truck across the street belongs to the new neighbors. They may be a little bit on the trashy side. Apparently their first week in the new house they strung a wire between two trees in the front yard and hung up there laundry to dry. You can't see the red AMC Gremlin which has been sitting in their driveway un-driven since they moved in.

Sam out in the back yard. He's a husky mix, so he spends a lot of time in the winter out in the snow. He'll spend hours out there rolling around and playing in the snow.

Sally out in the back yard sniffing around. She doesn't spend as much time out there as Sam. However, she likes to bark at the squirrels which built their winter nest high in big fir tree out there. This was my alarm clock two of the mornings I was there.

Monday night into Tuesday morning was the first big snowfall of the winter. It was about 6 to 8 inches of the white stuff. My flight home left Tuesday afternoon so I woke up early to get a head start on the snow. This is the front steps after clearing the snow and spreading the deicer.

I also cleared the driveway. Armed with the snow shovel, it took about ninety minutes to finish the job. I was starting to run out of places to put all of the snow. It wasn't a great job, but it was good enough to get the car out of the garage to get to the airport.

And since everyone asked (yes, just mom made it for me)...

Hamburger Noodle Hot Dish

1 lb. Hamburger (or Ground Turkey)
4 oz. Cooked Egg Noodles (wide)
1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup
1 cup Green Peas
1 cup Diced Onions
1/2 cup Milk
2/3 cup Grated Cheddar Cheese
1 cup Chow Mein Noodles
Salt/pepper to taste

Brown hamburger and onions. In a separate bowl, mix all other ingredients (except chow mein noodles). Preheat oven to 300-degrees. In a greased casserole dish, combine hamburger and noodle mixture. Add chow mein noodles to top of dish. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes.

Pretty awesome.

Hope all is well with mom and you arrive back home safely.

(Why did I think your mom lived in Florida???)

Only five more days (and counting) of work for me. . .

Who shoveled the side walk? Great job. That's a lot of trucks. Whatayagonnadowithum?

Love the recipe. Not sure about the Chow Mein Noodles. Would probably leave them out unless you can give me a good reason to include them.

Sam, are ya nutty? Sally, you're such a good girl!

God I love this place!

Thanks for HNHD! If we don't eat leftovers tonight it will be that as we have everything in the freezer or pantry! My kind of meal!
Love the new look and welcome home. Just Bob rocks!

ooooooo, I LIKE the new look, Bob!

Tell Just Mom thanks for the recipe, it's already been added to my folder.

I kinda miss the snow. I think, though, I would love to visit then come on home to Florida, ya know? I'm glad your mom has a nice neighbor that will come shovel snow for her; he sounds like a good kid so as far as I'm concerned, he can drive that ATV up and down the street whenever he wants.

Yay!!! Yummy noodle food.

I loved the pictures and now I am homesick. Bob, we just keep making each other homesick.

Your mom's dogs are adorable. I want to squeeze 'em till they poop.

Welcome back, and nice blog layout change.

Ooohhhh! Redneck neighbors. Everyone has got to suffer through that at least once in a lifetime. Unfortunately I've had more than my share. Man, I miss snow. I'm jealous. Mind shipping some my way?

Well, well, well, Sausage Mechanic went back to the old standby. No more Mr. Pickle. Damn.

Rednecks. The closest we got in this neighborhood are the people renting my darling friends house across the street. They pulled their white Mercedes on the lawn and nearly into the garden. I left a note on their windshield that read: "I can't imagine my friends would appreciate your car in their garden or on their lawn, so I'm taking a digital photo and emailing it to them. Good luck with that!" True. And yes, I did email the photo. My friend called within minutes. The car was removed as soon as my neighbors returned home. God I love the power that comes with home ownership!

XO Blottie!

Penelope/Karen... My family used to live in Florida but moved away probably about five years ago. That's probably what got the Florida idea in your head.

Megan... Thanks, I was trying for the dark foreboding look but got wintry instead. Oh well. Yeah, the dogs are great.

Kylie... Hi Kylie. The recipe is quick, easy, and low on clean up of pots/pans.

Suzanne... The neighbor kid did the sidewalks on both sides of the street. I told you he likes playing with his ATV and snow plow! Also, the chow mein noodles bring crunchy goodness to the casserole. I guess you could leave them out if you are strongly opposed to them.

Jennifer... I kind of miss snow too. That's kind of why I did the shoveling. just mom kept telling me not to do it, but I wanted to be outside in it.

Merely Me... Everyone loves a good casserole. Happy dining!

Queen Goob... I'll let just mom know. Yes, it's nice to know you can always leave the snow behind and not be buried in it for four months.

Karen ^..^... That's funny... it seems like we balance each other out sometimes! Please don't squeeze the dogs too hard, I'm not cleaning up the poop.

Kirsten... I'm probably more like Emeril than Martha but thanks!

SM... All the neighbors were missing was the beer refrigerator on the front patio. At least the Gremlin still had its tires.

Suzanne again... That's a real dichotomy, rednecks and Mercedes. Are you sure it wasn't an El Camino?

One more question? Since I am not waiting for the permission, I am going to ask it!

Back to the question post...

So, how did the recipe "event" come about? Were you in the kitchen with mom just taking notes and asking for the recipe (like on the sly with some made up excuse)? OR...did you tell her, "Well mom, I write this incredible blog (you wouldn't believe how many people read it) and some of 'em were asking for the recipe and it occured to me that I don't know how to make it as well as you? Would you please be so kind as to oblige so I can post it on my awesome blog? I promse to give you credit?!"

(I am contemplating signing off as "merely snowed in")

Merely Me... It went something like this:

just bob: Hey mom, can I get that recipe to make it when I get home?

just mom: Sure, here's the card. There's a pen and paper in the top drawer of the credenza.

just bob: Thanks ma.

just mom: and please let the dogs in while you're in the other room.

Too funny. Okay, I'll make it with the crispy little noodle the first time. If that doesn't pan out, I won't make it with the crispy noodles the second time. Or the meat! So basically I'll be eating noodles, soup, onions and peas. Oh, and almost forgot, cheddar cheese. Do you think that's a healthy menu plan? Well you know me, I'll balance the meal with a nice salad to reduce the risk of heart attack. What? God I love the Midwest.

And no, smart ass. That wasn't an El Camino! It's a very expensive white Mercedes. The number is much, much higher than mine. I'm in the 1's, that one's in the 5's. Put's my little sweetie to shame!!! Yes. There is a pecking order. *Hangs head.*

XO Blottie

(So many people are asking about "Blottie" lately. Thanks for doing the honors. You're a genius with links! Here sweetie, I just made your Mom's casserole, sit down and enjoy. Yes, of course I put the crunchy noodles on.) *Rolls eyes in head.*

Wintry can be as bleak and desolate as you want it to be.

I love pictures of the snow... hanging out in it, not so much.

Yum! I'm gonna make it with chicken.
