Mavericks

There sure was a lot of talk about mavericks during the vice presidential debate tonight. So what exactly is a maverick?

Ford produced a Maverick in the 1970's

Tom Cruise was Maverick in Top Gun

James Garner was Bret Maverick

Roger Moore was Beau Maverick

Maverick is an air to surface missile

Dirk Nowitzki is a Dallas Maverick

Maverick is a Roller Coaster in Cedar Point, Ohio

Mavericks is a surf contest in Northern California

The Mavericks are an alternative country band

There's a Maverick County in southwest Texas

These are not mavericks

Now you know what a maverick is and isn't. Class Dismissed.

I think you missed your point. You are trying to take a shot at McCain/Palin. But you're doing so by saying they're NOT Tom Cruise.
It's flawed logic my man.

According to you:
McCain != Maverick therefore McCain = Bad

But...
Cruise = Maverick
Cruise = Bad
therefore
Maverick = Bad
and
Maverick = Bad = McCain

Just some friendly advice from your friendly neighbourhood Logicman.

Hey Bob,
Thanks for this entertaining post on the word, maverick. Very clever!

Would you be able to explain something about your federal Legislature which confuses me? Is it correct that Bills are passed in your Senate and then ratified in the House of Representatives. I only ask because the opposite seems to happen in Australia.

Legislation is debated upon as a Green Paper in our lower house,that being the House of Representatives. If it is passed by the lower house the legislation is then debated as a White Paper in the Senate, that being our upper house.

Mark... Since class is in session, I'll help you understand the process here.

Bills can be introduced in either the House of Representatives or the Senate. If passed by both houses, it goes to the President to sign into law or veto the bill. If it is vetoed, it goes back to both houses and if enough people vote for it again they can override the veto make it law.

Here is a link to a very good, detailed explanation.

I wonder how many people played "shot for word" and died of alcohol poisoning last night.

Excellent!

Point of fact: If you have to keep telling the universe at large that you are a maverick, McCain/Palin, you ain't one.

Leah said...

Hate to say it at the risk of rabble-rousing, but Obama isn't really a maverick either...just sayin'...but then again, I think I'm turning anarchist...

p.s. Though maybe he's not claiming to be one!

Joe... Mr. Ed was a maverick?

whatigotsofar... You totally lost me with that one. That must be some sort of Canadian logic at work.

Annie... Well you betcha they did. I'll have to get back to you on that.

Megan... Thanks. I hope your Friday is looking up.

Lori... I said no thank you to the Bridge to Nowhere too.

Merely Me... Thanks for spreading the word of Bobness to the masses.

bobbi... You are welcome, and thanks for commenting!

Wow! That's too funny. I read Leah's response and was paging down furiously to leave my brilliant response, "He's never referred to himself as one." When I was so rudly tripped by first Leah, then you. Jeasus, I have a nose bleed, skinned elbows, and palms I'm still pickin' the gravel out of. So much for my brillance. but "HEY BOB, YOU FORGOT THE DAMN HORSE!!!" (Thanks Pracitcally Joe!)

This post is terrific. Every time she said the word "Maverick" last night I replied, "Oh right, that's what you are." You know that's going to be on SNL!

Sorry I haven't stopped by in a while. I needed a wee break, and still do. Just dropping by to check in with all of you and let you know I luv ya. Hang in there Bob. November is just a whisper away. Just like an X File, the truth shall be revealed. I swear to God, if we get 4 years of Palin and McCain I may just shoot myself! I can't imagine 4 more years of stupid.

Love you!

P.S. Your previous post is awesome. I'll write when I have more time. XO

P.P.S. I'll meet you guys at the Wild Onion.

Great post Bob. As long as there are no mavericks in the White House next year I will be happy. Just hearing Palin repeat that over and over again made me sick. It was like she was trying to hypnotize us.

BOB...Thank you for the informative reply. I visited the link and from what I read the the debating of a Bill is similar to the process in the Australian Parliament. The only difference here is that Bills can go back and forth between the two Houses of Parliament until there is agreement and then they are passed in the Senate and promulgated into law by our Governor-General after Royal assent by HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

ps. I hope that Suzanne's Rob doesn't find fault with my explanation!

Great refresher course. I've also been wonder exactly McCain was voted "Miss", since it wasn't Congeniality.

Kooka ~ You're so funny! No Rob wouldn't find fault. He's a constitutional law expert and trust me, you did good honey!!! In fact, you taught me something I wasn't aware of. I won't tell you what it was, but just so you know! Thanks, now I can share it over cocktails at the Wild Onion.

And thanks too Bob for the refresher course. I feel, well...refreshed and ready to answer any question posed to me by someone in the produce or dairy section at Safeway, Whole Foods or Save Mart, as well as Home Depot and Lowe's.

I grew up with Schoolhouse Rock. I'm just a bill up on Capitol Hill was my introduction to politics. What a great series. It's so sad kids today don't have those kind of fun ways to learn.

@suzanne~ Thanks! I am glad i did good. I can't imagane what it could be that I taught you. What was it??

ps. I deleted the previous comment. Too many mistakes

just bob said...

Mark... Yes I am!

Suzanne said...

Mark, knock it off. I have so much to learn and am always in awe of those who can teach me. For instance, I didn't know all of that about Australian law. You will laugh because I took so much English History, but I'm still confused about Parliament. Rob is forever trying to explain all the nuance, but for some reason it goes in one ear an right out the other. Why? I DON'T KNOW!!! I understand complex stuff, but just can't understand simple stuff. And trust me, that is NOT an insult to you or anyone or any govenerment. TRUST ME!!! It's just the way my brain is wired. My family has made fun of this all my life. For instance, I can't figure out in photography how you come up with a shutter speed (x) and an F stop(y) and end up with a photo (z). But can tell you what the end result means. WHAT???!!! I don't know why, I just know I fail in one area, but excell in another. If my sisters were reading this, they'd just die!!! I am SO, SO, SO imperfect!!! Mark, trust me, you have nothing to worry about. I'm running beside you, not ahead. Trust me.
