Off to The Wal-Mart

Day one of Project Vacation started off with sleeping in late. How pathetic is it that 8:00am is considered sleeping in? In the days of my youth, I could sleep in until 1:00 or 2:00 in the afternoon. After two cups of coffee, Mom and I piled into the Saturn and it was off to The Sam's Club and The Wal-Mart. Are you going to drive? Mom kept asking. It didn't take more than three hints before I caught on that she wanted me to drive. Fortunately, I've visited enough times that I know my way around town pretty well.

Hard to believe, but it was my first ever time inside a Sam's Club. It's like a grocery store on steroids. Everything is super sized. You don't buy a jar of pickles, you buy a five gallon buckets of pickles. The jars of mayonnaise are so big they have wheels on them and you pull them like carry-on luggage around the store. The tuna cans were the size of missile silos. You put those three ingredients together and you could have made enough tuna salad to feed the entire state.

So anyway, that was just a quick stop to pick up what appeared to be a 1,000 pound bag of dog food. After the forklift brought it out to the Saturn, we walked across the same shopping center to The Wal-Mart. I'm not a fan of The Wal-Mart. Mom knows this and I swear she does this just to torment me and see if I'll cave into mass commercialization and give my money to the ultra-rich Walton family. Although I'll probably lose my lefty-liberal membership card for admitting this, I did have to avail myself of the cheap, cheap cost for a 12-pack of Coke Zero. I rationalize that it couldn't be a product made in China so I wasn't contributing to the export of jobs overseas.

Just inside the door, I deftly elude the 200 year old greeter and stumbled upon the in-store Premier Bank...

This is a sound policy to institute for a bank. Apparently you can bring the firearm into The Wal-Mart, you just can't take it all the way into the bank. I didn't see any rifles, handguns, or muskets on the gun rack outside the bank so I felt safe enough to use the ATM.

It was the once-a-month grocery excursion for Mom, so we did a lot of shopping at The Wal-Mart. Here's Mom looking for fabric softener.

This is Mom buying hot dogs for the dogs. No, you didn't read that wrong. Mom buys hot dogs to slice up and put in the dog's food once a week. You'd get bored too if you ate the same dog food everyday of your life, says Mom. She's got a point there. I give her a little grief because we didn't get them any tater salad to go along with the hot dogs. She laughs at my gentle ribbing, then proceeded to make potato salad for dinner that night just to make sure there will be left-overs for the dog's "hot dog day." Guess who got the last laugh on that one.... not just bob. One full shopping cart (and a 12-pack of Coke Zero) later, the shopping was done and it was back to the Saturn for the ride home. Guess who drove again? Yep... it was me.

There you have it.... our day at The Wal-Mart.

8:00 a.m. would be sleeping in late for me, too. Have to wait for the kid's teenage years to appreciate real sleeping in again, I guess.

So, you started off your vacation with a cultural experience -- the culture of Sam's Club. I've never been there either (and I think I've never been in a Walmart -- am I a real American??). Thanks for the tour!

(And you should give your brain a talking to more often! Crazy scheduling choices, it's true.)

I was actually here first this evening, but when I tried to post my comment it told me that blogger was currently unavailable. So I am back. I love the photo of you and your mom. It is so sweet. Also, you have absolutely beautiful eyes. Are they blue? I do believe I could become lost in those eyes.

Cecile and kylie: Yes my eyes are blue, and yes it was a security camera which caught the photo! OK it wasn't a security camera. I really like the photo too, and made it the wallpaper on my laptop.

Jennifer: Sam's is an adventure... you have to find a member and go at least once. It was nice going to the grocery store and not have to pull out the debit card at the register. Living vicariously through Mom at The Wal-Mart!

Love it when my folks say "are we carpooling?" and then, when they show up at my house to get me, hand me the keys...

G'day Bob,
Thanks for sharing your shopping trip with us. I like how the aisles are nice and wide at Wal-Mart.
How thoughtful of your mum to buy some hot dogs for her dogs.
Great Post!

Mark.

I love the fact your mom was trying to ignore you busily snapping pictures of her while she was shopping. "Robert, stop that right now." LOL

What was that rubbish you tossed out about not being handsome? Bob needs some love……speaking of which I love that picture of you and your mom! Even though I still have the best mom, yours is REALLY close due to her patience alone. Trust me, I know these things, I wrote the rules.

Oh, and I'm sure your mom was glad you didn't dress like a highlander like I do when I have to go shopping in hell, errr Wal-Mart.

(sorry I'm late, I was at my mom's celebrating my niece's birthday.)

I agree with Queen Goob. You're so handsome. You're so hard on yourself. Why?

You know how much I love you, so relax and enjoy the convention, knowing you're loved here at home!!! You have such a huge fan base. I've read your comments. Have you???!!! You should.

XO

PS The photos with your mom are pricesless. She's amazing. I love that you love your mom and she loves you. Nothing better than that.

Ok...I agree with the whole Walmart thing...but with all the prices going up. It really makes it hard to not get a good deal...*hanging head in shame*. Glad to hear that you had so much fun with Momness! Too cute that shor with Bobness and Momness! Too cute!
Hugs,
Robyn

8am is sleeping in for me too. Although feeling sick the last couple of days had me sleeping in until 9am today.

I have to admit that I try to boycott Walmart on a regular basis. there are times when it is unavoidable, but I have to go there. They've put all the mom and pop places out of business, so there is no where to pick up those rare necessary items I need from time to time. I'll leave that vague. You'll thank me.

Also, Sam's is also Walmart. Sam Walton.

It is actually Super Walmart on steroids, LOL.

Clearly you don't live in Texas, as Wal-Mart and Sam's Club are on every corner.

My parents go to Sam's roughly every other week. I don't know what they buy. They pick up these awesome ten calorie popcicles for me though, which come in a package of forty.

It's not a bad place to buy meat, either. That is, if you were feeding the 101st Airborne.

Sleeping in for me is 8:00 a.m also... my 14 year old nephew was with me this weekend and when he emerged at 11:00 a.m. I was shocked and then I remembered.... YOUTH!

sshhhhh, don't tell anyone, but I love a trip to Walmart. Great pictures and you're a good son.

Yah, those days of sleeping all day for relaxation ended a wayyyy long time ago for me. I'm tickled if I can keep my eyes closed past 8.

The Walmart is my arch-enemy. I don't dig all the snot nosed kids running around. Or all the angry shoppers who bump me in the over crowded aisles.

I'd rather pay more and get everything I need at the grocery store across from there.

I dig up on the Mom & kid pix. I take them with my Mommy and with my kiddies every chance I get.

It's so funny about people's relationship to Wal-Mart...we feel so wrong about it, but most of us shop there sometimes...I know that furtive, guilty feeling though. This was such a funny, wonderful post. And your mom's dogs' "hot dog night" is the best thing I've heard in a long time. She sounds like a great lady.
